Part 3 – Project 4: P. 127 Reflection Exercise

Think about the appropriation of a space itself and how it can be transformed through alternate media depictions. Examine a location in a movie and how that environment may be perceived differently.

Refer to ‘Room One: Urban’ Pages 34 & 35.

The locations I have been looking at are Petra and Wadi Rum, in Jordan. Many movies have been filmed here over the years due to the amazing archaeological and aesthetic landscape, and Petra is one of the new seven wonders of the world.

The geology in Wadi Rum is such that it has been used as the planet Mars in the 2015 film The Martian, as well as in The Last Days on Mars (2013). It has been an alien planet in Prometheus (2012), the city of Agrabah in Aladdin (2019), and the planet Pasaana in The Rise of Skywalker (2019).

The ancient ruins of Petra have been featured in films such as The Mummy Returns and Transformers: Revenge of the Fallen. It was also where Indiana Jones found the Temple of the Holy Grail in Indiana Jones and the Last Crusade.
